Mountain Brook vs. Homewood: Which Birmingham Community is Right for You?

Mountain Brook vs. Homewood: Which Birmingham Community Is Right for You?

If you’re moving to Birmingham, Alabama, there’s a good chance Mountain Brook and Homewood will both come up during your home search.

They’re neighboring communities, both convenient to downtown Birmingham and UAB, and both offer beautiful homes, restaurants, shopping and established neighborhoods.

But living in Mountain Brook and living in Homewood can feel surprisingly different.

So which one is right for you?

After more than 20 years helping buyers and sellers throughout Birmingham’s Over-the-Mountain communities, my answer is: start with the lifestyle you want, then choose the house.

Here’s how Mountain Brook and Homewood compare.

Mountain Brook: Villages, Trees and Established Neighborhoods

One of the first things you’ll notice about Mountain Brook is its setting.

Winding streets, mature trees and established neighborhoods give much of the community a distinctive residential feel.

Mountain Brook also revolves around several village areas, including Crestline Village, Mountain Brook Village and English Village, where you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and everyday conveniences.

Housing varies considerably depending on where you look.

You can find charming older homes, mid-century properties, beautifully renovated houses and substantial luxury estates.

Even within Mountain Brook, areas such as Crestline, Brookwood Forest and Cherokee Bend offer very different housing and lifestyles.

Mountain Brook may appeal to you if you want:

  • Established neighborhoods and mature landscaping

  • Architectural character

  • Access to several village areas

  • Larger lots in certain neighborhoods

  • A strong luxury-home market

  • Convenient access to downtown Birmingham and UAB

  • A quieter residential atmosphere

Homewood: Walkability, Energy and Convenience

Homewood has a different rhythm.

Areas around Downtown Homewood and Edgewood offer restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and neighborhood businesses within a relatively compact area.

For buyers who picture themselves walking to dinner, grabbing coffee on Saturday morning or being close to community activity, that can be a major attraction.

Homewood’s housing is also diverse.

You’ll find historic cottages, traditional homes, major renovations, newer infill construction, townhomes and larger luxury properties.

Because Homewood is geographically compact and close to central Birmingham, convenience is one of its biggest selling points.

Homewood may appeal to you if you want:

  • Walkability in certain neighborhoods

  • Restaurants, coffee and shopping nearby

  • Convenient access to UAB and downtown

  • An energetic neighborhood atmosphere

  • Older homes with character

  • Renovated and newer infill homes

  • A more compact community

Which Is More Walkable: Mountain Brook or Homewood?

It depends entirely on where you live.

A home near Crestline Village can offer a very different experience from one farther into Brookwood Forest.

Likewise, a home near Downtown Homewood or Edgewood may be much more walkable than one in another part of Homewood.

That’s why I caution relocation buyers against labeling an entire Birmingham suburb “walkable.”

In Birmingham, the specific neighborhood—and sometimes the specific street—matters.

What About the Homes?

This is one of the biggest differences buyers notice.

Mountain Brook generally offers a broader selection of substantial luxury properties and larger lots, although smaller homes are available too.

Homewood often feels more compact. In highly desirable areas, buyers may choose a smaller lot in exchange for proximity to restaurants, shops and central Birmingham.

Both communities contain older homes, so buyers should pay attention to renovations, systems, additions and deferred maintenance rather than comparing square footage alone.

What About Commuting to UAB and Downtown Birmingham?

Both Mountain Brook and Homewood can be excellent options for people working at UAB, Children’s of Alabama, downtown Birmingham and other nearby employment centers.

But commute time can vary significantly depending on the neighborhood and time of day.

Someone relocating for a medical position at UAB shouldn’t simply search “homes near UAB.”

I’d first determine the lifestyle and home they want and then compare realistic commute options from individual neighborhoods.

What About Schools?

Both communities operate their own public school systems.

Because school rankings and individual needs change, I encourage buyers to research schools directly rather than choosing a home based solely on an online ranking.

Official school-system information, enrollment requirements, attendance zones and programs are the best places to begin your research.

Is Mountain Brook More Expensive Than Homewood?

Generally, Mountain Brook has a substantial concentration of higher-priced and luxury homes, but both communities contain expensive real estate.

Price varies dramatically by neighborhood, lot, square footage, condition and renovation level.

Rather than asking which city is more expensive, a better question is:

“What will my budget buy in each community?”

That’s where the comparison becomes useful.

Mountain Brook vs. Homewood: How Do You Decide?

If you’re torn between the two, consider your everyday priorities.

Do you want to walk to restaurants and coffee?

Do you want a larger yard?

Are you looking for a historic cottage, renovated home or larger estate?

How important is your commute?

Would you rather be near Crestline Village, Mountain Brook Village, Downtown Homewood or Edgewood?

How much renovation are you willing to take on?

Those answers often narrow the search faster than scrolling through hundreds of listings.

Homewood may appeal to someone prioritizing walkability, neighborhood energy and exceptional proximity to central Birmingham.

The best way to decide is to experience both.

If you’re relocating to Birmingham, I can help you compare not only Mountain Brook vs. Homewood, but the individual neighborhoods within each community—because that’s often where you’ll discover the biggest differences.
